PaediatricFOAM Subeditor – Applications Open

In the two years since it launched, PaediatricFOAM has rapidly grown to become the most popular UK-based Paediatric FOAMed website. We are endorsed by the London School of Paediatrics and over a hundred authors so far have contributed to our articles and resources. Our website gets thousands of hits per week from all around the world.

The appetite for, and popularity of, free online educational material is increasing and we want to build momentum in this area.

To help us move into this next exciting phase, we are looking to recruit two Subeditors who can help us grow and develop.

You don’t need to write articles yourself (although if you are keen to do this you absolutely can, and will be given full support to do so!)

The role of Subeditor will be focused on commissioning and editing submissions from interested authors. Editing of submissions includes working closely with authors on their writing style (to fit in with our author guidelines), preparing and laying out articles on WordPress and creating infographics. There will be lots of opportunity for creativity. No previous experience of WordPress is required – training will be provided!

Initially, these posts will be on a fixed term basis (6 months to one year, based on your own preference / your other commitments). For each Subeditor there will be a target of 10 articles over the course of a year (pro rata) – this means taking an article from idea stage through to publication on the website. Articles can be produced completely on your own schedule (i.e. sometimes you might have time to produce several articles in quick succession, other times you may need to take a few weeks’ break due to other commitments – this is absolutely fine!) Once you are trained, it is expected that this time commitment will work out at around 4 hours per article.

What does it take to produce an article?

Commissioning

Reaching out to colleagues: in person, using your own network and via social media – suggesting articles and seeking out interested potential authors and reviewers

Linking up potential authors (usually paediatric trainees) with senior reviewers (consultants with an interest in the article topic) and guiding them through the submission process

Editing

Refining the submission, making sure the style of writing fits with our ‘house style’

Working within WordPress to lay out the article in the required format, providing a final proof before article is published ‘live’

Visuals

Creating infographics

Selecting and creating suitable images to accompany articles

Laying out articles in a visually attractive format
