ESPNIC Course – NIV for Neonates & Children in Acute Settings

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has been widely used for some time in paediatrics for chronic
conditions, including in the home setting.
In recent years, non-invasive ventilation has been used increasingly in the acute setting,
both as a safe alternative in selected cases to invasive ventilation in the paediatric intensive
care setting, but also more and more in the delivery of high dependency care in general
paediatric settings.

The course combines on-line theory and clinical hands-on workshops for NIV care. To
benefit the most from the course’s hands on learning, course attendees will be expected
to read the online material prior to attendance and to pass a pre course online exam. In
the workshops, the attendees will rotate through three skill stations (paediatric, infant, and
neonates) to become familiar with the importance of appropriate indications, interface and
ventilator choice, mode selection and settings, patient monitoring etc. Additionally, analysis
of NIV failure will be explained with interactive clinical cases during skill stations.

The course aims to provide the attendees both with wide knowledge on the subject of
non-invasive ventilation and the appropriate skills to implement the technique in their
own units.
