Academic ARCP
All trainees, academic or otherwise have an ARCP every year. This includes trainees on OOP, even OOPR.
Trainees on an OOPR placement, irrespective of whether they have been an ACF or ACL before:
- Must "Add your Academic Supervisor"
- Must complete the Kaizen form entitled "Academic/ OOPR Supervisors Induction meeting" at the start of the placement
- Also complete Kaizen form entitled "Out of Programme Research/ Academic Supervision form" prior to ARCP
- Upload a form R and an ARCP preparation form.
If these forms do not appear in the RCPCH Kaizen menu, please contact training.service@rcpch.ac.uk to be assigned an OOPR/Academic role so allow access to the relevant forms.
Some OOPRs can count towards training time, up to a maximum of 12 months. For this to happen, this must be prospectively agreed by the relevant RCPCH subspeciality training committee, and this be evidenced in writing and uploaded to the portfolio. In general, OOPRs that incorporate some regular clinical work (eg a clinic related to the research) or where directly specified in the curriculum may be eligible for training time. Pure bench research is unlikely to be countable. Contact the relevant RCPCH CSAC for more information.
If you are on an OOPR that DOES count towards your training, or on an integrated academic post (ACF/ACL), your ARCP is done by a dedicated Academic ARCP panel, chaired by one of the Academic TPDs. Academic trainees in training must complete all the elements of the RCPCH Progress+ curriculum, identical to non-academic trainees, so the ARCP looks at both academic and clinical progression. As they have time in programme for academic development, they have less clinical training time to complete the curriculum.
For ARCP, trainees are expected to submit all evidence required for OOPR (above), as well as all the evidence as normal for a clinical ARCP (Educational supervisor form, MSF, WPBAs, form R - WBPAs required pro-rata proportional to clinical time since last ARCP). You should also consider logging any conference presentation, publication, teaching activity on Kaizen as portfolio events.
