Given the sheer length of the paediatric training programmes as well as the practice of rotational training within the UK, we propose a pilot scheme where trainees will be allocated an educational supervisor, who they can keep for the duration of level 1 training, regardless of rotation to other sites.
We believe this scheme will enable deeper familiarity and relationship-building between the trainee and the supervisor, ensuring that supervision moves beyond the ‘check-box’ exercise that it may sometimes feel like it is. As part of our ethos of improving the overall quality of educational supervision, we are also hoping to pilot a mechanism where trainees can provide anonymised, constructive feedback about their particular supervisors. This is to ensure supervisors also receive valuable feedback to help them to build upon their styles as mentors, helping them provide better support trainees.
