Everyday Excellence Subgroup – Who We Are and What We Do
By Dr Connor Brett & Dr Rebecca Oram
The Everyday Excellence (EE) subgroup works to understand and improve the day-to-day training experience of paediatric doctors across London. We work to support trusts to make meaningful improvements to paediatric posts and to celebrate training excellence across the region. Our aim is to ensure that every paediatric trainee, regardless of trust or specialty, has access to consistently high-quality training.
We oversee the Annual London School of Paediatric (LSP) Trainee Survey, run the Excellence Exchange programme, coordinate the London PAFTAs, and support the network of regional Trust Reps across North West, North Central East and South London - including delivering the annual Trust Rep Training Day.
This year’s LSP Survey saw one of our strongest engagement levels yet, with an excellent 89% completion rate, representing the views of 755 trainees.
In the survey, trainees identified the core ingredients of great training:
• A supportive, positive team culture
• Engaged, accessible consultants and MDTs
• High-quality, structured teaching
• Opportunities for leadership, independence and professional growth
The survey also highlights key areas where trainees tell us improvement is needed, this year’s regional themes centred on: rota and staffing pressures, access to supporting professional activity time, clinic opportunities and rest facilities.
Such strengths and areas from improvement identified within training is the driving force behind our Excellence Exchange programme which are one of our flagship quality-improvement initiatives. Developed to address the persistent variation in training quality across London, exchanges provide a structured, positive and non-judgemental forum where trusts:
- Showcase their areas of excellence - sharing what works well, how it is maintained and examples of outstanding practice.
- Reflect on areas needing improvement - using their own LSP survey results as the starting point, supported by the EE team, Head of School and the wider LSP.
- Co-develop practical, trust-level action plans - with local Trust Reps championing follow-through.
Our network of Trust Reps across tertiary centres, district general hospitals and community placements plays a vital role in interpreting survey results locally and supporting trusts through the Exchange process. By linking the survey with the Excellence Exchanges, we can clearly see what’s working well and where meaningful changes are taking place.
All our learning from over a decade of LSP Surveys is shared through the LSP website, so take a look and help spread improvements across London!
If you’re interested in joining our work or collaborating on a project, we’d love to hear from you. Recruitment for the EE Committee opens soon!
