There are lots of resources available to help trainees gain experience in Safeguarding children and the RCPCH aims to provide doctors with the essential competencies required in their child protection practice. Child protection continues to evolve, with particular changes in knowledge and focus occurring in the last 10 years meaning there is a need for continual updates and further training in child protection matters.

Please click on this link (http://www.rcpch.ac.uk/safeguarding) to go to the RCPCH pages that outline all the child protection courses/educational resources that are available.  This includes the Child Protection: Recognition, Response and Record (CPRR) one day course that is level 1 training based at ST1-ST3 trainees and the Child Protection In Practice (CPIP) online modules that is level 2 and 2 training an is aimed at ST5-6 trainees.

The CPRR course involves pre-course preparation in the form of an on-line VLE with a pre-course MCQ, and then a one day face to face course. The face to face element covers the essentials of recognising children at risk, focusing on good communication with families and how to best communicate with other professionals to organise the next steps in child safeguarding, with an OSCE assessment at the end.  This course received excellent feedback such as ‘A brilliant day with knowledgeable and approachable faculty. The communication scenarios were particularly helpful in thinking through not only the recognition of safeguarding issues but how to address them with parents.’

The CPIP course is a nationally recognised two year online educational programme that aims to provide the competencies required for trainee’s on-going child protection practice and builds on the competencies acquired in the CPRR course.   All of he learning outcomes on the course have been mapped directly to the RCPCH HST core competencies and there are six programme modules (epidemiology, underpinning principles, legislative framework and systems, clinical topics a, clinical topics B and special circumstances).

From the RCPCH page that you get to when you click on the above link you can then click on the links there to all these courses which gives you more information on them and details of upcoming dates and how to book.
