Welcome to London School of Paediatrics Simulation!
Who are we?
- We are a group of Training Programme Directors, trainees and educators who have a passion and love for simulation in clinical practice.
- There are 5 TPDs spread througout London for simulation:
Dr Amutha Anpananthar (NECL London), Dr Jane Runnacles (Education), Dr Mehrengise Cooper (lead for simulation, NW London), Dr Morwenna Hodin (South London) and Dr Trisha Radia (South London) - We have a network of paediatricians and allied health professionals within our faculty programme who deliver simulation in trusts all across London.
What do we do?
Our focus is to share innovative approaches to simulation across London. We have a novel approach to faculty development and organise courses for trainees and allied health professionals.
Faculty Development Programme
- Candidates on the PSFDP (Paediatric Simulation Faculty Development Programme) are senior paediatric trainees (ST678 or equivalent), consultants, allied health professionals who competitively apply to take part in the programme
- Our PSFDP cohorts generally commence the programme every December with a modular programme commencing with a Launch event
- Other modules include: Simulation facilitation on LSP ST1/ST3 courses, Simulation facilitation in local paediatric units (ED, NICU, Transport), Patient safety - latent errors and latent strengths, together with on-going expert mentorship and peer mentorship
Courses include
- ST1 and ST3 full immersion one day multidisciplinary course including 5 scenarios on the acutely unwell child
- ST3 part task & communication simulation days designed to prepare level 1 trianees for their level 2 posts.
- PRACP - paediatric return to acute paediatric programme for trainees returning to clinical work after a period of time out of training.
- Here is a very useful video on Human Factors that has been put together by the LSP team and provides excellent resources around this subject. Please have a look anytime and of course before attend the simulation training days:

UPDATE- SIMULATION for LSP during Covid Pandemic - Full Immersion WITH part task and VIRTUAL Communication skills sessions
The simulation team and London School of Paediatrics are committed to your training, education and safety and want to reassure you that we will be providing opportunities for you to attend a simulation session (virtually or face to face). The team have been working hard to explore how best we can provide this brilliant form of teaching but ensuring social distancing rules are maintained and ensuring your safety at all times.
We are pleased to announce that we will be offering two programmes designed specifically for our ST3 trainees, being mindful of this crucial year of training for them and preparing them for their role as a middle grade junior doctor.
Full immersion WITH part task
The full immersion course which previously was a whole day simulation programme will now only be available to ST3s for 2020 and offered as half day sessions. The simulation sessions will be offered in smaller groups and locally in your current ST3 trusts (where possible). We will aim to ensure you do your training with your current colleagues to minimise any mixing of teams. The half day session will still expose you to the same simulation scenarios that are included in the full immersion programme and the facilitators will incorporate 2-3 part task skills within this half day programme. You will either be contacted directly to book on to a course at your local site or booking details will be included below in the coming weeks.
Although, this year, we are unable to a separate part task programme, we have incorporated common paediatric procedures into the full immersion half day outlined above and there will be online learning material available on the website shortly. For those trainees who would like more experience with specific part task skills, do get in touch with the simulation TPD's or your local simulation lead who will be able to facilitate this.
Although this year, we are unable to accommodate the ST1 trainees on the full immersion course, the scenarios and materials have been shared with local trusts and will be delivered as part of your local teaching programme.
Virtual Communications skills sessions
We understand the value of 'simulating' difficult conversations and communications skills, in particular, for those trainees stepping up to ST4 posts. We have therefore composed a new virtual communication skills half day programme to replace the face to face communication day previously included within the part task/communication study day. The virtual programme is a half day session hosted on zoom for up to 8 trainees facilitated by a trained debriefer. You will have the opportunity to have experience in difficult conversations with an actor playing the part of a parents and a structured debrief thereafter. Dates and how to book will be available shortly on this page.
Those who are unable to make the dates offered or have any other queries, please do feel free to contact the simulation TPDs above.
