Paediatric Specialty Doctor at the Havens CYP March-September 2022

Applications are welcomed from dynamic and enthusiastic ST6+ Paediatric trainees with an interest in Safeguarding.  The post offers a tailored, closely supervised training experience in the highly specialised area of child and adolescent sexual assault/abuse. This is an established OOPE/T.

The Havens are London’s Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) based in Camberwell, Ladbroke Grove and Whitechapel. The Havens service is jointly commissioned by NHS England and the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), and has a strong partnership with the Metropolitan Police.

The Havens’ Children and Young People’s service (CYP Havens) supports children and adolescents when there are concerns about sexual assault/abuse. It provides expertise in holistic care of children and young people including assessment of injuries, forensic and medico-legal work, safeguarding, sexual health, counselling, psychology, advocacy and other specialist support.

Forensic medical examinations are conducted in the Havens’ forensic suites. The paediatric trainee will be able to shadow Havens paediatricians and Sexual Offences Examiners (SOE) during forensic examinations.  They will be trained in child protection medicals specifically for child sexual assault including skills in video-documentation, sexual health testing and report writing.  They will gain experience in court skills and statement writing.  They will have access to peer review.  There are also plentiful opportunities in adolescent health and safeguarding, particularly in relation to sexual assault.

You will also have the option of gaining further experience caring for victims of sexual assault of all ages (the predominant age group is adolescent and young adult) by joining the Havens out-of-hours Forensic examination rota as an SOE. This would require attending the Havens Introductory Training Course for Sexual Offences Medicine and a period of shadowing cases.
